Culms 3-14 m tall, 2-7 cm in diam., nodes not prominent; internodes 15-50 cm long; walls 6-12 mm thick; branches numerous at each node.
Sheath of culm deciduous, coriaceous, densely pubescent with dark brown hairs, fimbriate along upper margins when young; auricles of sheath convex, unequal, with tufts of brown flexuous bristles; ligule of sheath very conspicuous, denticulate, 5 mm high, margins with short brown bristles; death-blade triangular, glabrous or with scattered black-brown hairs on outside, with dense black-brown hairs within at base. Leaves 5-11, linear-lanceolate, 10-25 cm long, 1.2-2.5 cm broad, densely pubescent at base, veins 6-9, veinlets 8-9, densely spinulose-scabrous along one margin, sparsely so along other; petiole short, 2-4 mm long; auricles convex, rounded, with tufts of brown bristles; ligule of leaf convex, dentate, hairy; sheath of leaf 4-6 mm long, minutely pubescent toward apex.
Spikelets in clusters of 1-many at nodes of leafless branches, 2.5-4 cm long, 5-7 mm in diam., 4-6-flowered; glumes 2, 5 mm long, acute, 9-11-veined; lemma ovate-lanceolate, acute, 13 mm long, 17-20-veined; palea lanceolate, truncate at apex, 10 mm long, veins 7 between keels, 2 between each keel and edge, minutely hairy on upper keels; gynoecium 6 mm long; ovary obovate, with 3 vascular strands seen in cross section; style short with 3 feathery stigmas; stamens 6, anthers 6 mm long; lodicules 3, 1.8 mm long, hairy along margins.

台灣 : Commonly cultivated as a windbreak, around farm houses throughout the island, especially in the north and center, below 300 m, occasionally planted to 1,000 m.
